Test Questions

PISA is an international organization that sponsors mathematical competitions every four years. American students do not perform as well as we would like to think, scoring appreciably lower than their counterparts from other countries. Click here for six sample problems. Try to solve them; they are multiple choice. Easy? Difficult? What do you think is the age of the students who take the test? Please share your thoughts and your solutions to the problems.

  1. These questions started out very easy but got harder as they went along. It was interesting to see on the side of the page the percentages of students that answered these exact questions correctly all over the world. These questions needed thought and background knowledge.

  2. I found these questions to be a little challenging when I started out but as I went along they definatley became more difficult. I felt for these questions you really had to stop and think about what you were going to do. I also felt it was really interesting how on the side there were all the percentages of students who scored level 1 or above with the United States being 74%.

  3. The questions definitely got harder as the test went along but I still feel that some of them were just common sense questions. I was very surprised by how low the United States ranked on these questions!
